The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
