Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
